Thinking about a Kitchen Renovation?

I have been sharing some pictures and posts of our kitchen renovation journey with you.  I hope you enjoyed seeing them.

I will do a series of posts explaining our process, and if you're thinking of starting a kitchen remodel, hopefully, it will help you avoid some of our missteps and get some ideas from the things we did right.

Probably the best advice I can give is research, research, and do more research before taking the plunge.  No matter how much you prepare, you will run into issues, just accept it and move on.  But by researching and taking your time during the decision making phase you will avoid a lot of costly mistakes.

Research

Start with a notebook and a Pinterest board.

A small notebook and a ready pen that can be toted in your car or handbag will be invaluable.  Make notes of things you see that you like and where you found them and when you saw them.  It will be invaluable in backtracking to find something you really want in your kitchen, from cabinets or appliances, flooring, lighting fixtures or a decorative piece to a kitchen table or bar stool.  Be sure to note prices.

If you're not on Pinterest... sign up!  It's free!  Start a "Kitchens" board and pin anything and everything you see that you like.  You can go to mine and peruse the over 300 pictures I collected of all kinds of kitchens.  It certainly will get you started thinking about what kind of look you want.

Houzz is also another free site that can help guide you.  Lots of great ideas and pictures.  Our kitchen remodel was by no means cheap, but we found a lot of the remodels they had pictures of were either way out of our price league or they had far more space to work with for their kitchens than we did.  Still, the site did provide a number of ideas, certainly worth the time to check it out.  Also local contractors can usually be found there, which can be an enormous help.

We trolled kitchen remodel areas in all the home improvement stores.  We travel from Georgia to NY frequently and looked in both places.  Even the big box stores will have different displays in different stores.  Don't overlook the little guys either, they too, have some great ideas.

We started with appliances... we went everywhere.... Big box stores, appliance stores, Sears... opened fridges and stoves... looked inside dishwashers... made notes of brands, features and prices.  Then scoured the internet for reviews.  We talked to co-workers about what they have, what they liked and didn't like.  Keep in mind, what works well for someone else, may not necessarily work best for you.  You don't want to pay for expensive features that don't matter to you

Write everything down in a section of your note pad... I used those sticky divider tabs you can get at an office supply store to make sections for appliances, cabinets, flooring, furniture even paint.  Be prepared.... hubby may roll his eyes about keeping the notebook, but he'll come around... it comes in handy, trust me.

Anything I found on the net.. I copied and pasted the link into a word document and saved it... so I could easily find what I saw a week or even a month ago and didn't junk up my favorites list.  It saved us a fortune... $20 here, a $100+ there...it adds up.. you will be surprised.  The same fixture or kitchen table can be a vastly different price at different places.

Listen to sales people, they can be a wealth of information.  Learn a little here and there... that, too, adds up.

We finally settled on what appliances we wanted and even the best prices were a lot higher than our original budget for them.   We wrote all the brands, features and prices down, including installation costs and delivery.  We even took pictures with our smart phone of the stickers and sale signs.

ASK Questions

The number for all the appliances staring us down was just over $7200... when we started we had about $5000 penciled in for an appliance budget.   I kept checking sales, signed up at various sites for sales notification ..

Pay dirt....I found a "semi-annual" sale at Home Depot... we checked it out .. made note of the sale dates... the total appliance price now was about $1500 less.  So we knew we needed to get moving so we could take advantage of the sale.  So we geared up and forged on with the rest of the planning....

What happened...

We ended up at Lowes for the cabinets (more on that in another post) and when the designer asked about appliances... we mentioned we planned on buying them at Home Depot since they were on sale.   He asked to see what we planned on purchasing... we whipped out our notebook.... and pics of the prices.... Lowes carried all of them.... and not only matched the sale price... but if the items were in stock they take another 10% off..(all of ours weren't in stock, but the highest priced one was).. and if we used our Lowes card we had the option of 0% interest for a time period or another 5% off.... since we planned on not financing this project... we took the additional discount.... and paid the bill when it came...now the cost was under $5000... less than our original budget and a lot less than the sticker price.

Lesson learned... do your homework, keep track of everything and ask about price matching.  We were really lucky the designer asked the question, we hadn't thought to ask about price matching.

Be sure to look at the big picture too.... delivery charges, installation prices (if you use them from the store or arrange your own) and how long they will hold your purchase while you renovate.  We had thought to ask about that.  Both Lowes and Home Depot said they would hold the  fully paid for appliances.  Check with them for the limits when considering the purchase, it allows you to take advantage of great sales.

More to come.... hope this helped to start getting you thinking.

And we have a stove!

Here's a quick look at our new gas range and oven.... trouble is.. the stove works...the oven doesn't.  Samsung's Customer Service is definitely lacking.... they were not helpful.

So a call to the plumber in the morning to rule out gas line issues.... which are doubtful.. but we will rule them out first...then a tech call.

But... we're almost back in business... so the blog will revving back up....

Remodel Update- Countertops!

Well we're finally getting there..... the kitchen should at least be partially in business next week... the countertops have finally arrived so the sink, dishwasher and ice maker will be installed Monday.  All I can say is finally!!!

The range hood gets installed Tuesday or Wednesday.. or so they say... I have learned not to count the days... because when it gets delayed the disappointment is overwhelming.  The stove/oven gets installed right after.... the crown molding gets replaced next week (the wrong one was put in originally.. don't ask... I'll explain in another post).

We're waiting for one cabinet to come in for the island and a couple of replacement things for damages.  The butcher block is still in production.

Warren is still working on the pantry....Never ending!  Anyone thinking of remolding... I will pray for you for sure.... it's been a long few months... 3 1/2 so far.. it will be over 4 months by the time it's done...

Now for the countertops... they're quartz... enjoy the pics!

More Pics... The New Floor is Down!

Our floor was installed today!  It's a wood laminate ... we decided to go with laminate instead of hardwood because of the heavy traffic through the kitchen and little Miss Daisy... our wood floor in the den has taken a beating with the constant in and out.

We got the new kitchen table and chairs yesterday...progress!  Now things slow down... the butcher block top for the island won't be in until next week and countertops only get measured the end of next week... we may move the appliances in .. they are currently in our dining room.

Here are some more pics... hope you enjoy seeing them.

The "boss" making sure everything is up to snuff!

Over 10 weeks and counting...

It's been over 10 weeks and counting.... and seems the timeline keeps getting pushed out... between deliveries and multiple contractors. it's been definitely a lesson in patience..if you see a large mushroom cloud over south Georgia.. you will know I finally exploded....

The picture above is what will be the stove wall with the stove in the center.  Right now the cabinets are still being put in.. the stove is waiting in my dining room to be moved into place.

This is some of the boxes of Pergo flooring... there are 27 boxes in all.. and they needed to be laid flat.. not touching so air can get around them... for an optimum 72-96 hours before it gets laid down...to get acclimated to the air in the house.  We wanted to do the full recommended 96 hours since it's so humid here in Georgia.

I have boxes all over the place... because I had to leave room for the contractor installing the cabinets... fun fun fun... but exciting!

I'm sharing the pictures... hope you like seeing them.. the last post was 10 days ago... as you can see above, some cabinets are now in ... and need to be finished by Wednesday when the floor is put in....

I will post more in the coming days.. since it's finally moving faster....

This week... the new kitchen table comes Tuesday so that will go into the one room that isn't already filled with boxes and appliances....the kitchen cabinets should be in except for the island...that has to be moved into the dining room until the floor is in on Wednesday.... the dining room wall unit also needs to be installed...  the appliances moved into place (right now the stove, the fridge and the dishwasher are in my dining room).. the countertops measured ....and the butcher block top for the island arrives.... busy week ahead!

Cabinets are Here!

Here's a pic of the boss inspecting the cabinet boxes.

Finally the kitchen cabinets are here!  Walls have been sanded, nail holes filled and sanded, walls were primed and painted... he's still working on filling and sanding the trim nail holes.... the appliances come next week... we are finally getting there!

Hope all is well with you all... and you enjoy seeing my pics of our renovation.... I can't wait to get back to cooking and blogging... I miss it so much!

Here's another picture taken just before the cabinet delivery....

The new French door and kitchen window are in.... and the new pantry is just waiting to be finished...

We Have Walls!

We have walls! ... not much else... but we are at least enclosed now!

The floors have been ripped up... including the sub flooring... Warren has been working hard on that .. and he started replacing the sub flooring.  He decided to do it himself since the flooring estimate was a high for that part of the remodel.  We're leaving the actual floor installation to the professionals.

Now the wait is on for the cabinets.... I must admit it is getting old not having a kitchen... I miss cooking!... I honestly can't wait.. the cabinets get here next week!  The Countdown is on!

Down to the Studs

Kitchen renovation progress... we're down to the studs... the wall that was between the kitchen and the old dining room is history!!!

The sheetrock people are coming tonight (yes.. it's Saturday night).. their choice ... so we will have new walls started!

Most of the electric has been done... the plumber has moved the gas line to the new location where the range will be.  And last but not least... the cabinet order went in... along with the sink and hood order.  The new kitchen table is in but they will hold off delivery until we're ready.

Life without a kitchen has it's challenges.  We do have a microwave and a toaster oven.. although we haven't used the toaster oven yet.

Truthfully it has been going smoothly.  We did run into a few snags but they were handled without a lot of trouble.  So it goes....

Under Construction

Hi All....

In case you have been wondering why my posts have dwindled.... we are currently under construction... or should I say destruction... the kitchen that is... gutting the whole thing... taking down a wall... new appliances, cabinets, lighting fixtures.. the works.

A truly ugly, hideous kitchen I inherited from previous occupants and owners... the house had 50 years worth of layers of ugliness... they will be gone forever!

The planning has been in the works for some time... it takes time and patience to research options, make decisions.. and then start the ball rolling.

Well the ball is rolling... so new recipes are going to be few and far between... unless you count heating Hot Pockets or Lean Cuisines cooking...

Bet you're wondering how in the world can she post new recipes.... well.. I did do some advance work and just haven't posted them yet.. and then there is the New York house we will be at next month.. so we'll see.

Right now in hot, humid Georgia... pardon our dust.  I am considering bringing you along on this adventure... after all ... renovating a kitchen has to do with cooking too.

So stay tuned..
