This great breakfast crockpot recipe.. will have you, not
only, waking up to a fabulous smelling house, but a family eager for
breakfast... a great weekday breakfast idea!
TIPS
Use Old Fashioned Oats or Steel Cut Oats.. quick cooking
oats would not be a good choice.
You can use any milk you want... but keep in mind.. a lower
fat milk will have a runnier consistency and a lighter flavor... If using fat
free milk I would recommend you use 4 cups milk and eliminate the water.
I used Fuji apples because that's what I had... if you
decide to use Granny Smith apples.. the flavor will be more tart... and you may
want to consider adjusting the amount of sugar.
Red Delicious don't make a good apple for this.. they just
don't cook all that well.. I would stay away from them.. they're great eating
apples. Use any good cooking apple.
You can leave the skin on your apple.. but they tend to get
chewy.. I always peel mine.
Speaking of sugar amounts... we like things a bit sweet...
especially Warren... so 1/4 cup brown sugar wasn't quite enough for him... I
put the sugar amount with a + sign... I wouldn't recommend going less than a
1/4 cup... but you could easily add a bit more... or.. and this is something I
like to do since he likes things sweeter... just sprinkle a little sugar on top
when serving.. it will add a bit more sweetness to the bowl and not for
everyone since not everyone wants more.
You can use white sugar instead but you will be missing out
on the great brown sugar flavor.
Raisins are optional.. we like them... I used golden raisins
but regular raisins will work well also.
Lightly spray the inside of your crockpot with butter
flavored cooking spray... it will help clean-up.. I forgot to do that.. and
mine is soaking in the sink as I write this post.
My crockpot takes a bit to warm up but then it runs hot...
if yours is like that.. try making it for 7-8 hours on low instead... mine went
close to 9 hours.. the consistency was great but I added a dash of milk on top
of mine when eating it because I like a wetter oatmeal.
Try this.. it's inexpensive.. and easy... a great way to
start the day!
