Recipe: Lil Smokies in a Blanket

This recipe is a slight variation on the Pillsbury classic Piglets in a Blanket, using little smoked sausages instead of the usual little hot dogs.. It was one of our New Year’s Eve munchies. I decided to post it now because of all the games coming up and with the weather so cold right now in most of the country and the world (the UK is now in a deep freeze too)…more people are staying in and finding activities like family game nights a better alternative to going out in the cold.

These are so easy to make… I used a can of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls. The official Pillsbury recipe that makes Piglets in a Blanket tells you to cut each Crescent roll triangle into three…. Frankly I found it cumbersome … so I unrolled the dough into a long rectangle and cut strips (cut them along the long side so the strips aren’t that long). Then just place the little sausage at one end and roll the dough strip around it… it’s as simple as that.

You can roll these ahead and just pop them into the oven when you’re ready….

It’s a great little snack … serve with mustard and I promise you they will be a hit.

Recipe: Lil Smokies in a Blanket

All you need:

1 can Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
24 fully cooked Lil Smokies cocktail sausages

All you need to do:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or grease it.

On a flat work surface, unroll the crescent dough into one big rectangle.

Cut strips (cut them along the long side so the strips aren’t that long).

Place the little sausage at one end and roll the dough strip around it.

Place them on the cookie sheet, leaving about an inch between them.

Bake at 375 degrees F. for 11 to 15 minutes or until deep golden brown.

Immediately remove them from the cookie sheet.

Serve with mustard.

I, too, keep some of these little smokies on hand. They are a great football game finger food! And I love them dipped in a mustard sauce.

Grill... already planning for the big game? It's still a month away! But you're right ... they're on my list of foods for that day too!

Thanks Cami! I went to your blog... I actually understood most of it without the translator... I grew up in a German speaking household and took it in school clear through college... but it's been a long time... they say if you don't use it you lose it... which is true... so I think I'll be visiting your blog more often...
Your pictures are beautiful!

I just use biscuits (make sure they are good quality, flaky biscuits with layers that can be separated) and tear each one in half by separating the layers. Then I roll up a smoky in each one.
