Recipe: Apple Crisp

We love apple crisp and this recipe is just terrific. It’s so easy to make and always a hit. It makes a great dessert to bring to a work food day or church supper. At home I serve it warm with vanilla ice cream.

The recipe calls for Golden Delicious apples, but I have used Granny Smith apples, it gives a really nice tart and sweet flavor to this dessert. When using tart apples, such as Granny Smith apples, I just up the sugar by about ½ cup in the apple mixture.

You can add raisins, they make a wonderful addition.

You can substitute water for the apple juice if you don’t have apple juice on hand.

I don’t usually peel my apples, but you certainly can.

If you have already made my Chunky Applesauce and have some left, you can make the topping for this recipe and bake for about 15 minutes or until topping is baked. What’s nice about using the Chunky Applesauce, it’s easy to make only a few servings of crisp, just take what you need and cut back the topping ingredients to ¼ cup oats, ¼ cup flour, ¼ cup brown sugar, 2-3 tablespoons melted butter, 1/8 teaspoon baking powder and 1/8 teaspoon baking soda)… perfect for two people…. the only problem is … you may get complaints about having no leftovers!

Enjoy!

Apple Crisp Recipe:

All you need:

6 Golden Delicious Apples, cored and sliced
½ cup white sugar
½ cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon flour
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ cup apple juice
1 cup quick cooking oats
1 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
¼ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ cup melted butter

All you have to do:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix the sugars, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg together. Add the apples and turn to coat. If adding raisins, add them now (about a cup) and turn to mix evenly.

Place the apple mixture a 9 x 13 baking dish. Pour apple juice evenly over the mixture.

In a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and melted butter together. Evenly sprinkle the oat mixture over the apple mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
